Saturday Sounds

On this day in 1812, the Grand Armèe of the French Empire, led by Napoleon, entered Moscow.   Unfortunately, their Russian foes had left little shelter or supplies there, and eventually the force had to start the long slog west, finding no relief from winter.  By December, the army escaped Russia with fewer than 1 in 5 of the French and allied soldiers who'd entered.

This pivotal series of events inspired Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to write a little piece of music...
