A matter of life and death

"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him."
- Deuteronomy 30:19-20
Far from choosing life, it seems humanity is increasingly welcoming death:
Parents should be allowed to have their newborn babies killed because they are “morally irrelevant” and ending their lives is no different to abortion, a group of medical ethicists linked to Oxford University has argued. (emphasis added)
And on the other end of life's spectrum:
A controversial system of mobile euthanasia units that will travel around the country to respond to the wishes of sick people who wish to end their lives has been launched in the Netherlands.
The scheme, which started on Thursday, will send teams of specially trained doctors and nurses to the homes of people whose own doctors have refused to carry out patients' requests to end their lives.
Death is an enemy, that entered the world through sin.  We have but a brief lifetime for the Spirit to soften the heart and allow Christ to take up residence.  The Evil One knows this, and seeks to shorten that window in any way possible.  As the heart of our 'modern' society becomes ever harder to the Word of God, the increase of depression, despair and hopelessness makes life seem more a burden than a privilege.  So it is no wonder so many now seek to eliminate the inconvenient... and when that includes their own life, self-destruct.

May God wake us up before this embrace of death leads us back to the lessons of history for a refresher course.
