With double-digit ratings growth this season, Spanish-language broadcaster Univision is off to a better start than any of the major English-language networks, and the future is promising as well. The new census is expected to show a nearly 45% increase in the number of Hispanic Americans since 2000, to a total of 50 million. How do we keep a sense of community when the fastest growing demographic, largely made up of immigrants (legal and otherwise), has no incentive to converse in the native language of their neighbors? Spanish-speaking children can be taught in public schools en Español, then return home to watch afternoon TV en Español, followed by dinner table conversation en Español. And while other language groups may not have a "Big 5" broadcast network, they certainly are accommodated in most government transactions, with official documents printed in a multiplicity of languages. Heck, the ever-reliable Ninth Circuit says you can't even force people to prove citizenship before registering to vote! (I know where my birth certificate is...)
America hasn't been this balkanized since the 1850s. Republicans watch Fox, Democrats watch anything but, y nuestros amigos desde el sur miran al Univision. Each fragment is a self-contained echo chamber.
Esto no es buena...
