Razor's edge

Many Americans have a feeling the nation we grew up with is balanced on a knife edge, ready to be severely injured by the accumulation of unwise policies spanning several decades.

They're also increasingly opposed to the current administration's direction, sensing in it only acceleration of this bleak outlook. So why does that direction persist?

Occam's Razor says the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. So, Watson -- let's make this elementary: What to make of an administration that:

- Adds unprecedented amounts to the national debt
- Effectively nationalizes everything from banking to the auto industry, while proposing to subsidize 'journalism' (MiniTrue*, anyone?)
- Not only doesn't do much to help with the oil spill in the Gulf, but actively hinders available options
- All but ignores record flooding in Tennessee (I only include this because the same cast of rascals excoriated their predecessor over Katrina... sauce for the goose, etc...)
- Needlessly alienates countries friendly to the U.S.
- Continues to double down on Afghanistan, even while rattling the saber ever louder at Iran

If America had a dashboard, I'm sure the temperature gauge would be pegged to the right and the RPMs in the red zone. As Scotty would said, "Cap'n, she canna take much moor o' this!"

So why are we still flooring the pedal?

The simplest explanation would be a conscious or unconscious desire to wreck the ship of state as it's been sailed for two centuries. But there's nothing in our president's past that even hints at that possibility.

...is there?
