The muezzin was a-standin' on the radiator grille..." - The Clash
Well, at least in Switzerland that's where the muezzins will have to stand, since the Swiss voted decisively to ban the construction of minarets. Naturally, there's been a hue and cry from some quarters, claiming this means the Swiss are bigoted, intolerant extremists. Funny how that crowd never seems to ask the Saudis why Bibles and churches are prohibited in the land of Mohammed (Peace Seems Never Near him). Minarets have but one function: to sound the Islamic call to prayer. The Christian equivalent is certainly less and less tolerated in the West. Such one-sided scrutiny merely gives aid and comfort to the very extremists the Swiss are concerned about, and makes it far more likely the average European will eventually be forced to choose between capitulation to aggressive outside influences or a reactive extremism of their own. As one writer puts it:
[T]hey can hardly be blamed, because they have acted to protect their culture and their principles. There is everything wrong with prejudice and hatred. But there is also something very wrong with not being permitted to defend what you have against those who would not join it but change it. (emphasis mine)
