It's all under control... literally...

There can be no question the level of government activity and management of our economy is completely out of control:
The U.S. government and the Federal Reserve have spent, lent or committed $12.8 trillion, an amount that approaches the value of everything produced in the country last year, to stem the longest recession since the 1930s. ((a recession, it must be said, largely produced by an era of easy monetary policy and the encouragement of assuming ever-larger amounts of debt, both public and private -- Jemison))
In essence, the government is directing the allocation of resources (most of it instruments of debt) equivalent to the entire national economy. This is, literally, the nationalization of the economy and the American way of life. All political and economic power is now concentrated in Washington, and there is currently no coherent counterweight to how that concentrated power may be employed, either at home or abroad.

Given the economic consummation, this quote seems to fit:
"We can't expect the American People to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism."
-- Nikita Khruschev (1894-1971), Premier of the Soviet Union
