Three years

Hard to believe, but today's the third 'blogoversary' of this site. Many of the trends that prompted me to start posting my musings have only accelerated in that time. Warnings that were laughed at only two years ago are now today's headlines.

I believe the election of Obama culminated a trend in our country to place our 'hope' (pun intended) in government. In one way, it's easy to feel pity for the man--expectations for his administration were raised so high (something he only encouraged) that no mere mortal could hope to live up to them. But as long as everyone from Citibank to the city council is looking to Washington for salvation, nobody will repair their own house. And that's a major problem.

When Nehemiah returned to oversee the rebuilding of the wall in Jerusalem, he divided the labor up by families. Each family had their section to repair, and to be ready to defend. This is how a society rejuvenates; not from the top down, but from the bottom up. It will not be easy--our walls are long since toppled, morally, economically and physically. Enemies will jeer and discourage those who try to shore the foundations once again.

We face unpleasant times and difficult labor ahead. But few generations are given such a clear opportunity to choose the direction in which their future will go.
