As noted here, much of that land is leased for commercial use--logging, mining, etc. All well and good. But it begs the question: if Uncle Sam, landowner extraordinare, demanded fair market value for those leased resource rights, would we have to tax individual citizens' incomes to fund the legitimate core functions of government?
