Amerika, 2008:New York City subway riders are now protected by police officers armed with MP5 submachine guns and accompanied by bomb-sniffing dogs, authorities said. New York Newsday reported Friday that five or six teams of six police officers and a dog will patrol heavily used subway stations and lines as part of Operation TORCH, or Transit Operational Response with Canine and Heavy Weapons. The beefed-up security will be paid for by a $151 million grant the city received from the Department of Homeland Security...
Similar patrols work above ground, patrolling near landmark buildings and in heavily trafficked parts of the city, such as by Wall Street ...
I don't know about you, but I feel so much safer knowing we have potentially trigger-happy law enforcement types prowling crowded civilian mass transit areas with rapid-fire assault weapons. Just think--if New York's finest can get off 50 rounds with pistols, how much more effective will they be with machine guns, especially since potential targets...I mean citizens... are massed together?
I remember seeing scenes of National Guard patrolling L.A. after the OJ Simpson riots, and thinking "this isn't my picture of America." Then came Waco. And military forces in airports after 9/11. More recently, armored vehicles helped knock on the door of a group of "outsiders," taking hundreds of their children away. Now New Yorkers will pass stormtroopers during their daily commutes. At least they're not asking for "your papers, please." Yet.
Where's my country, and how do I get back there?

Your country is in front of you, based on what you're willing to do for it.
Willingness is one thing; being in a position to make it count is another. A wise man once told me: "being willing to fall on your sword for something is a noble instinct, but since you can only do it once, make sure you choose carefully so it will matter."
