Saturday Strings

Sometimes it seems the Church doesn't know what to think about the electric guitar. Granted, it's more often used to draw attention to that which isn't edifying or glorifying (hence, the still-changing contents of my music library). It can just as easily be used the other way.

We can sing one of Martin Luther's great hymns for self-satisfaction or to honor God. This is no different--as with everything in life, the question is where is your heart's focus and desire? Christians operating in the mass media have the unenviable challenge of using appropriate means to be heard, then directing that attention to Someone much more worthy than they. Just as an effective preacher can lose focus on the purpose of their ministry as their audience grows, a commercially successful musician can succumb to accolades as well. Is it for the people, or is it for the Lord?

Though much of the "contemporary Christian music" scene bears very close scrutiny, there are a few who've managed, however imperfectly, to match message and medium. The soapbox is now vacant. On to the music. Sola Deo Gloria!
