I've never liked the concept of a "hate crime." Is murder somehow more foul because it's racially motivated? Regardless of what went through the perpetrator's mind (something we should humbly acknowledge we can't read), the victim is dead. A crime is just that -- an offense against a person. Calling it a "hate crime" is simply saying we find the activity "double plus ungood."
That said, I found this table of statistics interesting. Given all the stereotypes about the hopelessly racist South, it surprised even me that only TWO of the former Confederate States placed in the TOP TWENTY of states with hate crimes per capita.
All ya'll Yankees can stop lookin' down your noses at us now...go clean up your own houses!
