There are a lot of compassionate people in America, and the nation is the better for that. One indicator of this is the large number of families waiting to adopt children.
Adoption mirrors the blessing God shows to those who follow His Son--the granting of status in a new family that is unearned, undeserved, and given purely out of love and grace. Most adopted children find themselves in circumstances far better than the ones they left.
But what would you think of someone who breaks into your house, makes use of the various facilities then demands you adopt them into the family, since they're already there?
That's what defenders of illegal immigration are asking America to do. Yes, most illegals come from very poor circumstances and most improve their situation by moving to the U.S. That in no way negates the right of those who are already here to control who joins the "family" and how. Compassion does not require becoming a doormat for anyone who cares to wipe their feet.
Today's problem is the result of 40 years or more of willful neglect of border and immigration policy. Yes, for better and worse, illegals are now part of the fabric of the U.S. economy. It did not have to be that way. But we have likely passed the tipping point, and demographics will now drive the trend whether we want to reverse course or not.
Any nation that fails to regulate the flow of newcomers and maintain expectations of assimilation to the new society is comitting suicide. Just ask these folks.
